In my experience working with teams across many segments – military, government, for-profit, not-for-profit, community initiatives, and even children’s sports teams – I have observed this:

Every individual who willingly began working at a new organization or position did so with a desire to do their very best.

I believe “willingly” describes the clear majority of those we hire.  With few exceptions, if you see any other attitude short of “willingly” in the recruiting and hiring process, DO NOT HIRE THEM!  Why would you do that to your existing team?

Why is it then that an individual willing to do their very best at the start becomes unmotivated after a short period of time?  There are many factors and situations that can influence this, but the predominant principle is that without being intentional to strive for excellence, mediocrity just happens!

Leaders alone are responsible for ensuring that their culture relentlessly abandons mediocrity and pursues excellence.  It is imperative that you, as leader, “Know Yourself, Know Your People, and Know Your Stuff” so you understand how best to motivate, energize, and influence each individual to draw out their greatest potential for the team.  In so doing, each team member will do their very best as they desired from the start, and you will end up Transforming your workforce into an Elite Team.
